100 years of the 2nd Viennese Mountain Spring Pipeline

Vienna is mainly supplied with water from two mountain spring pipelines, which together bring almost 590,000 m3 drinking water into the city every day.

As early as the Roman era, a water pipeline several kilometres long supplied what was then Vindobona, drawing the water (ca. 5,000 m3 a day) from the area around modern Perchtoldsdorf and Gumpoldskirchen. In the 17th century, wells on the Neuer Markt supplied water to parts of the city through a number of smaller water pipes.
