150 years of Alfons Mucha


On the occasion of the 150th anniversary of the birth of Alphonse Mucha CZ post issued a set of stamps featuring the work of Alphonse Mucha: Sarah Bernhard – Gismonda and Zodiac.

Alfons Mucha was born in Ivan?ice family court usher Andrew Mucha. He studied at the Slavic school in Brno, where a job as a church singer in the Petrine Boys Choir. After the failure at the entrance exams at the Prague Academy briefly worked as a clerk at the court Ivan?ice. 1879 goes to Vienna to work as a painter of theatrical scenery in the company, Kautsky – Brioschi – Burghardt. He also worked to create the interior decoration of the castle near Emmahof Hrušovany over Jevišovkou.

In 1885 he moved to Munich two years later in Paris. The turning point in his career came in 1897, which got a contract to create a poster for the actress Sarah Bernhardt. The actress later signed a contract with Mucha and for her and the Renaissance Theatre in Paris by several other posters. His life’s work is a series of large-format canvases Slav Epic, where he worked for seventeen years. Alfons Mucha was very popular in the U.S. and recognized, but the spirit was a great patriot.

He was the first author of postage stamps and banknotes of the independent Czechoslovak Republic. Mucha was not just a graphic designer and creator of the famous poster in the style of Art Nouveau (Secession), a versatile talent abounded and intervened in many fields, sculpture, design, starting and ending at the theater. Proposed labels on bottles, chocolate, cigarettes, or painted on a restaurant menu. He died in 1939 after interrogation by the Gestapo for pneumonia. He is buried in the cemetery at Vysehrad in Prague.
