Paul Henry (1876 – 1958) was born in Belfast. After a brief spell as an apprentice in a local linen factory, he began his formal art studies at the Belfast School of Art, and later at the Académie Julian in Paris, under James McNeill Whistler. During his time in Paris, Henry became influenced by the Post-Impressionist style of van Gogh and Cézanne, which can be seen throughout his work.
