On 21 May, 2009, An Post issued a stamp to mark the FCI European Dog Show 2009, to be held in Dublin from 30 May to 1 June.
Until recently, quarantine rules would have made it impossible for Ireland and the UK to compete at a European event. Now, however, the Pet Passport means that kennels and owners from all over Europe can meet and compete.
The Annual Dog Show is held in the Royal Dublin Society, and the Irish Kennel Club has maintained that tradition. This time, however, there will be as many as 20,000 canine visitors, accompanied by perhaps twice that number of human handlers and enthusiasts.
The Kennel Club (UK) is to run a special competition, ‘The Kennel Club Special Crufts Qualifying Show for Irish Native Breeds’.
The Irish Kennel Clubs, like their UK counterparts, play a crucial role in preserving bloodlines, keeping meticulous studbook records of all purebred dogs of all recognised species.

Stained Glass Windows, as other artwork, have enabled iconographic documentation and made us aware of relevant historic, social, political and religious events throughout the history of mankind. The small pieces of glass are arranged to form patterns or pictures. The design of a window may be non-figurative or figurative; may incorporate narratives drawn from the Bible, history, or literature; may represent saints or patrons, or use symbolic motifs, in particular armorial. Windows within a building may be thematic, for example: within a church – episodes from the life of Christ; within a parliament building – shields of the constituencies; within a college hall – figures representing the arts and sciences; or within a home – flora, fauna, or landscape. This is the case of the window depicted in this issue which stands in the main stairways of the paper factory in Burgos, an institution belonging to the Spanish National Mint and which refers to the paper making process.

The Jewish rabbi and scholar Judah Loew ben Bezalel (c. 1525-1609), also known as Rabbi Löwe or as the Maharal of Prague (MaHaRaL is the Hebrew acronym of Morenu Ha-Rav Loew, “Our Teacher the Rabbi Loew” or also Morenu Ha-gadol Rabbi Loew, “Our (Great) Teacher Rabbi Loew”) is a significant historical person. He served in the position of leading land rabbi in Mikulov and later in Prague. He founded and led a talmudic school (yeshiva) in the Prague Jewish Ghetto and set up the regulations for the chevra kadisha (burial society). An established authority and expert in the Torah and the Jewish religion, he is compared to J. A. Komenský not only for his opinions as a teacher. His interest in alchemy was the likely reason for his audience (16.2.1592) with the Emperor Rudolf II. The life of the Rabbi Loew is covered with numerous stories and legends, the best known of which is the legend of the Prague Golem.

Spejbl and Hurvínek, the most famous Czech puppets, are the theme of the traditional issue dedicated to children. They were conceived by their spiritual father and performer Professor Josef Skupa (1892-1957). The figure of Spejbl was created for the Pilsen Puppet Theatre by the woodcarver Karel Nosek in 1920. Before the birth of Hurvínek Spejbl, coupled with Kašpárek, belonged to the most popular heroes of Pilsen children. Hurvínek was invented, designed and created in 1926 by Gustav Nosek (Karel Nosek’s nephew). The Theatre of Spejbl and Hurvínek was established by Professor Skupa in 1930 as the first professional puppet theatre of a new type. In the same year the Spejbls welcomed new members – Hurvínek’s friend Máni?ka and the dog Žeryk. Added to these core four types was Mrs. Kate?ina Hovorková – Máni?ka’s pedantic granny. The humorous stories from the life of these wooden heroes are known to children almost all over the world where the Theatre Spejbl and Hurvínek played. The theatre performs also satirical comedies for adults.
