The Battle of Aspern took place on 21 and 22 May 1809 between the Napoleonic armies and Austria near the villages of Aspern and Essling (now part of Vienna). It was of historic importance above all because it was the first time Napoleon was defeated on the battlefield.

    Its not clear why Austria should honour Napolon with a stamp on his splendid horse, when he was defeated in Aspern & Essling, Can someone with knowledge of the battle please clarify ?
