It was a miraculous healing and the courage of an abbot from Garsten in Upper Austria that led to the construction of the pilgrimage church of the Merciful Christkindl at Baum unterm Himmel.
In 1725, the church was consecrated and in 1787 raised to the status of an independent parish church. The establishment of the Christkindl Christmas Post Office in 1950 was the Austrian Post Office’s contribution to the little baroque treasure becoming known throughout the world.
