Title: Christmas: 2009
Date of Issue: 6 November 2009
Country: Ireland
Denominations: 82c, 55c
This year’s Christmas stamps feature two images reproduced courtesy of the Chester Beatty Library.
The 55c and 82c stamps each feature images from the Gospel Book from the Monastery of Gamaghiel, Khizan. An integral part of the Library’s Armenian Collection, this historic manuscript dates from approximately 1451. The images chosen are beautiful representations of the Annunciation for the 82c stamp, and the Nativity for the 55c.
The Chester Beatty Library also provides inspiration for the booklet stamp, based on a stunning portrait of the Virgin and Child by the renowned Flemish artist Simon Bening. Painted around 1530, this comes from the Rosarium of Philip II, a prayer book that once belonged to the King of Spain.
