Title: Jersey Surfing
Date of Issue:2 June 2009
Country: Jersey
Denomination: £3.00
The Jersey Surfboard Club celebrates its 50th anniversary in 2009 and Jersey Post will be marking the occasion with a Miniature Sheet.
‘Surf-planing’ – lying down flat on carved, solid wooden boards – was first introduced to Jersey in 1922 by Jerseyman, Nigel Oxenden, after returning to the Island from Africa with the idea.
The design of surfboards has evolved over the past 50 years and the stamp within the Miniature Sheet features just some of the shapes which have appeared.
A 1950s photograph, taken by the late J D Houiellebecq ARPS, features surfers on Jersey’s St Ouen’s Beach, the ‘home’ of the Island’s surfing community, and it is this iconic image that appears on the Presentation Pack.
