2010 Year of the Tiger

New Zealand post will issue a set of four stamps to celebrate the coming new lunar year “The Year of The Tiger”. The Chinese lunar calendar series has already become a popular collecting choice worldwide.

50c – Year of the Tiger
The Year of the Tiger will begin on 14 February 2010 and finish on 2 February 2011. It’s a year that honours a symbol of courage – a fearless and fiery fighter that was revered by the ancient Chinese as warding off the three main disasters of a household: fire, thieves and ghosts.

$1.00 – Tiger
People born in the Year of the Tiger (1914, 1926, 1938, 1950, 1962, 1974, 1986 and 1998) are generally well liked because of their charismatic personalities. Always at their happiest when climbing the ladder of success, they are quick learners and often prefer to work alone. Famous ‘Tigers’ include Agatha Christie, Marilyn Monroe, Queen Elizabeth II and Tom Cruise.

$1.80 – Multicultural New Zealand
Chinese people have been part of New Zealand’s cultural make-up since the 1860s, when the Dunedin Chamber of Commerce sought workers for the Otago gold mines. From a population of just over 1,200 in 1867, the Chinese/ Taiwanese Chinese population has grown to more than 145,000 – a vital part of a multicultural society.

Chinese festivals have rapidly become a highlight of New Zealand’s entertainment calendar. In Wellington, the 2010 Chinese New Year celebrations will include a colorful street parade, a bustling Asian market and a cultural showcase of local and international performances.
