350 Years of the Monastery of São Bento de Sorocaba

The stamp reproduces the work “Mosteiro de São Bento de Sorocaba”, oil on canvas by artist Sonia Vrubleski. The picture shows the facade of the building that houses the said monastery, which is celebrating its 350th anniversary of the foundation, and evokes, through its architectural forms, the simplicity and solidity, typical of buildings in the Brazilian colonial period.

The monastery was built in 1660, six years after the founding of the village. It’s probably the only Benedictine monastery in the country to retain the original building, with thick mud walls. Other, older, such as São Paulo (SP), Salvador (BA) and Olinda (PE) were significantly altered by reforms and new buildings.
