75th Anniversary of The Museum of Kretinga

Lithuania post issued a set of two postage stamps to marks the 75th anniversary of the museum of Kretinga.
The Museum of Kretinga was established in 1935 on the initiative of the public figure and teacher Juozas Žilvitis. The vast majority of objects came as a present from Juozas Žilvitis’ personal collection, which consisted of 300 objects.

Since 1992, the museum has been functioning in the 19th century manor of the Counts Tiškevi?iai. The manor is surrounded by the 19th century park and a winter garden, where concerts of classical and modern music are given, is standing nearby.

The year 2010 marks the 75th anniversary of the museum. During this period, the museum’s specialists have collected tens of thousands of objects, which have become an inseparable part of the Kretinga land cultural heritage.

The visitors of the museum can get acquainted with the old culture of the Curonians (Kuršiai) illustrated with archeological findings from the Lazdininkai burial ground, the works of the Kretinga land carvers creating religious sculptures, numismatic collections, and the works of applied and visual art.
