Czech post issued a set of stamps Flower Growing – Beauty of Orchids. The stamps feature exotic orchids originating from foreign locations. This is the first time in the history of Czechoslovak and Czech design that this motif has been chosen for a stamp.
The orchid family is a diverse and widespread family of flowering plants with colorful and fragrant blooms. Along with the Asteraceae, it is one of the two largest families of flowering plants, with between 21,950 and 26,049 currently accepted species, found in 880 genera.
Selecting which of the two families is larger remains elusive because of the difficulties associated with putting hard species numbers on such enormous groups. Regardless, the number of orchid species equals more than twice the number of bird species, and about four times the number of mammal species.
It is no secret that tropical and subtropical orchids are grown in the Czech Republic, not only in botanic gardens but also by ordinary people in their greenhouses, conservatories, and flats.
Many of these growers have joined the Czech Orchid Society, which has celebrated on 31 July 2011 already the 125th anniversary of its foundation. The Czech Orchid Society also provided the orchids used as model for the entire sheet. Growing of exotic orchids has a long tradition in the Czech Republic.
It is a Czech native, Benedikt Roezl, who is recognized by the world as the greatest “orchid hunter.” Other famous growers include the Klaboch brothers, Seidl, Houda, Pechá?ek, Vráz, and Fry? who returned from the tropics with their health undermined, Knobloch who died in Mexico, and Haenke killed in Bolivia.
Natives of Czechoslovakia stood at the very beginning of importing and growing of exotic orchids in Europe. No wonder that contemporary growers are greatly experienced not only in growing but also in reproducing them. Rare orchids from across the world, with a wide range of species, can therefore be commonly seen in the Czech Republic.
