Christmas 2011 – Switzerland

Swiss post issued three special stamps featuring “Chapel”, “Christmas tree” and “Chalet” as a part of Christmas celebration.

Christmas Day is an annual holiday generally celebrated on December 25 by billions of people around the world. It is a Christian feast that commemorates the birth of Jesus Christ, liturgically closing the Advent season and initiating the season of Christmastide, which lasts twelve days.

The precise day of Jesus’ birth, which historians place between 7 and 2 BC, is unknown. In the early-to-mid 4th century, the Western Christian Church first placed Christmas on December 25, a date later adopted also in the East. Theories advanced to explain that choice include that it falls nine months after the Christian celebration of the conception of Jesus, that it was the date of the Roman winter solstice, or of some ancient winter festival.

The United Nations declared 2011 as International Year of Forests to raise awareness and strengthen the sustainable forest management, conservation and sustainable development of all types of forests for the benefit of current and future generations. In all 48 member countries of the European organization “PostEurop” issued stamp with “Europa” mark.

The biological, ecological and climatic role of forests for life on Earth is invaluable. The loss of forests means the loss of biological diversity and climate change.

World Circus Geneva 2010

Swiss Post issued a new special stamp with a “circus” look as the celebration of its participation in the “World Circus Geneva 2010″.

In 2010, Geneva will be a world circus capital. The city with its hallmark “jet d’eau” fountain is hosting “World Circus Geneva 2010″ with its wealth of cultural happenings, all revolving around the circus.

The stamp shows a circus from an unusual angle: it presents a worm’s eye view, with the tip of the big top resembling a clown’s face.
