Elvis Presley honoured through postage stamp

USPS issued a special stamp in the music icons series to honour Elvis Presley, the singer, guitarist, musician, actor and The King of Rock and Roll.

The stamp features a 1955 black-and-white photograph of Presley taken by William Speer.

Also featured on stamp is a small gold crown, a nod to Presley’s nickname and Presley’s signature, in gold ink, along the right side.

Elvis Presley is the first artist to be featured twice on the US stamps, first being honoured on stamps in 1993.

About Elvis Presley

Elvis Aaron Presley (January 8, 1935 – August 16, 1977) was an American singer and actor.

Regarded as one of the most significant cultural icons of the 20th century, he is often referred to as “the King of Rock and Roll”.

Presley was born on January 8, 1935, in Tupelo, Mississippi, the son of Gladys Love and Vernon Elvis Presley.

His music career began there in 1954, when he recorded a song with producer Sam Phillips at Sun Records.

Accompanied by guitarist Scotty Moore and bassist Bill Black, Presley was an early popularizer of rockabilly, an uptempo, backbeat-driven fusion of country music and rhythm and blues.

By 1956, he was an international sensation. With a sound and style that uniquely combined his diverse musical influences and blurred and challenged the social and racial barriers of the time, he ushered in a whole new era of American music and popular culture.

During his illustrious career, rock-and-roll superstar Elvis Presley starred in dozens of feature films, won three Grammy Awards, and recorded 18 number one singles.

Elvis died at his Memphis home, Graceland, on August 16, 1977.
