Famous People of Lithuania
Lithuania post issued a set of three stamps featuring famous people, Gabriele Petkevicaite-Bite, Artist Justinas Vienožinskis and Stasys Šalskauskis.

Gabriele Petkevicaite-Bite (1861–1943)

Writer, pedagogue, philanthropist and public figure.
One of the most famous Lithuanian women’s of the end of XIX century and beginning of XX century which left deeply signs on national education, culture and literature field. Printed public articles in “Varpas”, “Vilniaus žinios”, “Lietuvos žinios” and in other periodical publications since 1890. Established educated youth supporting society “Žiburelis” together with the noblewoman J. Juškyt? in 1893. Worked on organizing the first Lithuanian play “Amerika pirtyje” (author Keturakis) in Palanga in 1899. Participated in the Great Seimas of Vilnius in 1905, also in the Constituent congress of the Union of Lithuanian Women in 1907, for a long time she was a chairwoman of this Union.

Women’s movement was one of Gabriele Petkevicaite-Bite’s top priorities. She worked as an assistant in the hospital during World War I. She was elected to the Constituent Seimas in 1920. She chaired the first meeting as the oldest Constituent Member of Seimas. Worked in various community and charitable organizations, wrote and was Lithuanian and German language teacher in High School in Panevežys.
In 1943 of July 14 died in Panevežys.

Justinas Vienožinskis (1886–1960)

Professor, artist painter, art critic and pedagogue.
One of the most prominent Lithuanian cultural person’s of the XX century. He graduated from abroad in 1914 and returned to Lithuania where in Kaunas created High Drawing Classes, which was reorganized to Kaunas Art School in 1922 on his initiative. Chairman of the Lithuanian Union of Art in 1935–1936. Moved to Vilnius in 1940, recreated the High Art School – Academy of Fine Art together with other artists in which he taught painting in 1940–1946. He was granted as a professor in 1946. His personal Art exhibitions in Lithuania were held in 1928, 1961 and 1986. J. Vienožinskis painted portraits and landscapes of Lithuanian writers and other artistic and cultural figures during the post-war. He was a professional painter, a great teacher, insightful and principled art critic, active organizer of cultural life and developer of cultural background.
In 1960 of July 29 died in Vilnius.

Stasys Šalkauskis (1886–1941)

Professor, philosopher and pedagogue, author of Lithuanian Catholic Federation “Ateitis” ideology.
One of the most famous Lithuanian philosopher’s of the XX century. He taught in Kaunas in High Classes since 1921. He taught Logic, Aesthetics, Philosophy and Pedagogy in Lithuania University in 1922–1940. Initiated the establishment of the Lithuanian Catholic Academy of Science (hereinafter – LCAS). Leader of Lithuanian Catholic Federation “Ateitis” in 1927–1930. Became the LCAS academian in 1933, he was a chairman of the Academy in 1938–1940. Printed articles in “Logos”, “Naujoji Romuva”, “Tiesos kelias” and “Židinys” publications. He taught Philosophy in Vytautas Magnus University (hereinafter – VMU) Department of Theology and Philosophy, at first as an associate professor, later as a professor. He became a rector of VMU in 1939. S. Šalkauskis rose to a new level pre-war Lithuanian philosophy of science in his works, also enriched the science with the dictionary of Philosophy of culture. His dictionary of Philosophy terms is still used.
In 1941 of December 4 died in Šiauliai.
