Croatian Post put into circulation the “FIFA World Cup 2010 South Africa” commemorative postage stamp.
Croatian Post has commemorated the start of one of the most important sporting events in the world, which takes place from 11 June to 11 July, with the release of a football-themed postage stamp. This year we will watch the world’s best football players competing in the FIFA World Cup for the first time on the African continent.
Thirty-two teams will play at the very south of Africa, in the South African Republic. Traditionally, most teams are coming from Europe, led by Italy, the defending champions, along with the strong teams of Spain, England and Germany.
The second continent in terms of numbers is Africa. Among other teams from South America come Brazil and Argentina, two strong candidates for the title. Looking back at the past 18 championships, English footballer Garry Lineker’s famous words “Soccer is a game for 22 people that run around, play the ball, and one referee who makes a slew of mistakes, and in the end Germany always wins.” are not entirely true. Although Germany has won the FIFA World Cup three times, Italy is in front of them, having won the championship four times, and Brazil, with five titles.
Croatian national football can be proud of the legendary third place at the World Cup held in France in 1998, when Croatian forward Davor Šuker won the best striker award with six goals. The same was accomplished by Croatian striker Dražan Jerkovi? in Chile in 1962.
