Australia post issued stamps paying tribute to international humanitarians officially honoured by Australia for their acts of courage, compassion and leadership.
The stamps feature the face and symbolic imagery of each humanitarian: Mother Teresa, Nelson Mandela and Raoul Wallenberg.
The stamps are designed by Sonia Young of the Australia Post Design Studio, comprising three domestic base rate (70c) stamps.
Tribute to International humanitarians
Mother Teresa (1910–1997) was appointed an Honorary Companion of the Order of Australia in 1982 “for service to the community of Australia and humanity at large“.
Mother Teresa is internationally recognised for her work with the poorest of the poor and visited Australia at least 12 times during her lifetime.
The stamp design incorporates a portrait of Mother Teresa in her iconic blue and white sari.
Nelson Mandela (1918–2013) was appointed an Honorary Companion of the Order of Australia in 1999 “for Services to Australian-South African relations” and for his “outstanding leadership” in bringing non-racial democracy to South Africa.
Nelson Mandela first visited Australia in 1990, following his release from 27 years of imprisonment for his opposition to the apartheid regime, and again in 2000 after the end of his term as President of South Africa.
The stamp design incorporates a photographic portrait of Nelson Mandela in one of his iconic ‘Madiba’ shirts.
Raoul Wallenberg (1912–?) became Australia’s first Honorary Citizen in 2013 for “his selfless and tireless devotion to human life during the Holocaust“.
Raoul Wallenberg was a Swedish architect and diplomat who saved tens of thousands of Jews from Nazi extermination, despite the risk to his own safety (and his fate remains unknown).
A significant number of those saved came to Australia.
The stamp design features a photographic portrait of Wallenberg, recently discovered in the National Archives of Hungary, as well as an example of the identity pass issued to provide Jews with protection from deportation.
