Magna Carta stamps from Jersey

Jersey post issued six Magna Carta stamps commemorating 800 years since the sealing of the Great Charter, one of British history’s most famous documents.

The stamps features the six ideology of Magna Carta, Justice, Freedom, Human Rights, Liberty, Citizenship and Democracy, the rights of a Citizen.

Magna Carta, an exceptional document on which democratic society has been constructed, was sealed 800 years ago on the banks of the River Thames at Runnymede.

On 15th June 1215, the original Great Charter was agreed by King John when he yielded to the demands of feudal barons and bishops to limit his powers.

The Great Charter promised the protection of church rights, protection for the barons from illegal imprisonment, access to swift justice, and limitations on feudal payments to the Crown, to be implemented through a council of 25 barons.

Magna Carta established for the first time the principle that everybody, including the king, was subject to the law.

After John’s death, Henry III, reissued the document in 1216, stripping off some of its more radical content. It was used again at the end of the war in 1217, which formed part of the peace treaty agreed at Lambeth, where the document acquired the name Magna Carta.

Although nearly a third of the text was deleted or substantially rewritten within ten years, and almost all the clauses have been changed in modern times.

Magna Carta still forms an important symbol of liberty today, often cited by politicians and campaigners. Today also Magna Carta remains a cornerstone of the British constitution.

In the 21st century, four exemplifications of the original 1215 charter remain in existence, held by the British Library and the cathedrals of Lincoln and Salisbury.

There are also a handful of the subsequent charters in public and private ownership, including copies of the 1297 charter in both the United States and Australia.
