Monaco celebrating 70 years of the United Nations

Monaco post issued stamp celebrating 70 years of the United Nations an intergovernmental organization promoting international co-operation and peace.

The 70 year of the United Nations is an opportunity to reflect – to look back on the UN’s history and take stock of its enduring achievements.

70 years of the United Nations

The United Nations was established on 24 October 1945 after World War II in order to prevent another such conflict.

The UN had 51 member states initially; and currently there are 193 members.

Today, the principles which led to the creation of the UN seem more important than ever:
– ensuring peaceful co-existence and cooperation between nations
– taking an interest in human rights and dealing with the new security
– economic and environmental challenges faced in a world which is more globalised and interdependent than ever

On UN Day in October, in celebration of the UN’s 70th anniversary, more than 350 landmarks in more than 80 countries across the globe lit blue – the official colour of the United Nations .

The stamp features the LOGO which has been created by the UN for use with UN 70th anniversary activities and programmes.
