Netball World Cup SYDNEY 2015 stamp issue Australia

Australian stamp issue to celebrates Netball World Cup SYDNEY 2015 (NWC2015), to be held from 7 to 16 August 2015 at Sydney Olympic Park.

The top 16 netball nations from around the globe, including the top six teams from the 2011 World Netball Championships in Singapore, will compete over 10 days for international netball’s ultimate prize.

The event is held every four years since 1963, to celebrate the sport of netball, the most popular women’s team sport in Australia.

NWC2015 marks the second time that Sydney has hosted the tournament, the last being in 1991, and the third time for Australia.

Sydney was announced as the host city for the 2015 tournament by the International Netball Federation (INF) in 2011 at Singapore, host nation of the 2011 World Netball Championships.

Australia, secured hosting rights after defeating a rival bid from Manchester, England.

The 16 teams qualified via a series of Regional Qualifying Events held in all corners of the world. Set to compete this year are Australia, Barbados, England, Fiji, Jamaica, Malawi, New Zealand, Samoa, Scotland, Singapore, South Africa, Sri Lanka, Trinidad and Tobago, Uganda, Wales and Zambia.

The Australian Diamonds team is currently ranked No. 1 in the International Netball Federation’s world rankings. Australia is the event’s reigning champion, winning 10 out of 13 tournaments to date and coming second three times.

The 2015 tournament comprises 64 matches played over ten days. The participating teams were initially divided into four pools (A, B, C and D) of four teams.

During the preliminary pool stage, teams in each pool played each other once. In every pool match, two points were awarded to a winning team, while no points are given to a losing team.

The two teams with the highest amount of points in each of the two First Eight pools, advance to the semifinals and the bottom two teams join the teams from the Second Eight two pools at the Playoffs, ultimately contesting for 5th–16th placings.

The winners of the semifinals contest the final while the losers play for the bronze medal.
