Croatian Post issued a postage stamp of Olympic Games LONDON 2012 featuring Olympic rings and Olympic flame.
The Olympic Games LONDON 2012 are scheduled to be held in London for 17 days from July 27 to August 12, 2012. Having hosted the Olympic Games in 1908 and 1948, London has become the first city in history to hold the Olympic Games three times.
In these London Olympic Games, which has adopted the slogan of “Live as One” and the motto of “Inspire a Generation,” 10,000 athletes from around the world will compete in 26 events. Baseball and softball will be removed from the list of official Olympic events from these London Olympic Games, with the women’s section being added to the boxing event for the first time in Olympic history. Korea will dispatch 370 athletes who will compete in about 23 events.
London is for the third time a host of the Olympic Games. First time, in 1908, it replaced Rome. Those were the fourth games of the modern period with 2008 participants from 22 countries competing in 19 sports and 110 disciplines. Most medals (145) were won by Great Britain.
In London also the new length for the Marathon race was determined – 26 miles and 385 yards – in order to have the finish of the race in front of the royal box at the White City Stadium. The English say that this is the official length of the Marathon while the French consider the Marathon from the Olympic Games in Paris in 1924 as the true measure for the race.
On the program of the Olympic Games in London in 1908 were for the first time also diving and field hockey and also for the first time the slogan The most important thing is not to win but to participate, was launched.
At London Olympic Games in 1948 there were 4104 participants from 59 countries. They were held 12 years after the games in Berlin and German and Japanese participants were banned from them. For the occasion no new sports objects were built and the participants stayed in military barracks. The most successful nation with 84 medals was USA.
The competition was organised in 17 sports and 136 disciplines. In decathlon the winner was a 17- year old American, Bob Mathias, who won gold after only four months of practicing this sport; until today he has remained the youngest winner in the history of athletics. The swimming competitions were held for the first time in indoor swimming pools.
Since 1992 Croatian competitors have won 17 Olympic medals at Summer Olympic Games. From the three gold medals two were won by our handball team – in Atlanta in 1996 and in Athens in 2004. The gold medal from the Olympic Games in Sydney in 2000 was won by Nikolaj Pešalov. From the six silver medals one was earned by our athletics, gymnastics, swimming, basketball, water-polo and rowing and from the eight bronze medals three were won in tennis, two in taekwondo and one in rowing, shooting and weightlifting.
