For the third and final time the focus of the stamp folders produced since 2007 by SEPAC (“Small European Postal Administrations Cooperation”, to which Liechtenstein also belongs) is on “European Landscapes”. Following “Beautiful Corners of Europe I” (2007) and “Beautiful Corners of Europe II” (2009) this year’s issue too is intended offer an exclusive platform for philatelic and touristic self-promotion. For this purpose Liechtenstein has opted this year too for a photograph by local photographer Marco Nescher.

2011 Millennial Anniversary of the Tripitaka Koreana
A thousand years ago, work commenced on Korea’s first woodcut Tripitaka, the “Chojo Daejanggyeong” or “the First-edition Tripitaka Koreana.” Tripitaka (Daejanggyeong) is the collection of “Gyeongjang (Sutra Pitaka),” the compilation of Buddha’s utterances, “Yuljang (Vinaya Pitaka),” the record of Buddhist precepts and “Nonjang (Abhidhamma Pitaka),” the translation of what Buddha said. It was during the Goguryeo era in the 4th century that Buddhism was first introduced to Korea. It steadily developed over the eras of Baekje and Silla to reach its heyday during the Goryeo era.

Pink RibbonIt was in 1996 that the international breast cancer expert Dr Ernie Bodai launched the first breast-cancer stamp. The idea was for this stamp to raise a maximum of donations for breast cancer research. In the meantime, the stamp has raised an unbelievable USD 30 million in America for the National Cancer Institute and the breast cancer research programme. Encouraged by the success, Dr Bodai has made it his life’s work to launch this stamp in as many countries as possible to promote the cause.

Elisabeth Gorgl“Elisabeth Görgl’s Courage brings Gold!“ was the headline in “Der Standard” after Lizz Görgl’s victory in the Super-G at the Ski World Championships in Garmisch-Partenkirchen last winter. A few days later this congenial sportswoman went one further and won a second gold medal in the downhill race. The whole of Austria celebrated with this new double world champion, whose twin achievements were the (provisional) highlight of her successful career.

One thousand years have elapsed since the historic events recounted in „The Saga of Burnt Niall“ took place at Bergthorshvoll in the south of Iceland. The saga deals with the process of blood feuds in the Icelandic Free State where minor insults to one‘s honor could lead to destructive and prolonged bloodshed. In the saga 100 armed men attack the farm as a part of a cycle of killing and vengeance.

Amnesty International 50th Anniversary

Amnesty International 50th AnniversaryAmnesty International is an international organization fighting for human rights all around the world. Amnesty was founded in 1961 by Peter Benenson, a Bristish lawyer. The organization is concerned with human rights regardless of politics, religious matters or ideology. It was awarded the Nobel Peace Price in 1977. The emblem for Amnesty which was designed by Diana Redhouse is based on a candle encircled in barbed wire. The origin of Amnesty can be traced to Mr. Benenson‘s campaign for human rights in connection with the imprisonment of Portuguese students that had been arrested for protesting against the infringement of political freedom.
