Estonia post issued stamp featuring Estonian Bird of the year Great tit, a bird living in various woodlands forests, parks, gardens.

The Estonian Ornithology Society elects the bird of the year since 1995.

Starting from January, the ornithological society ran a variety of activities and a public outreach program to raise awareness of the great tit, as well as other members of the tit family.

Estonian Bird of the year great tit is known to everyone by its black longitudinal strip as well as the black head and a big white cheek blot.

The great tit is a distinctive bird with a black head and neck, prominent white cheeks, olive upper parts and yellow underparts, with some variation amongst the numerous subspecies.

In Estonia it is a usual brooding bird who lives in various woodlands forests, parks, gardens. It builds its nest usually in tree hollows or nest boxes.

Tit is widespread in Eurasia, but also breed in northwest Africa. Its range extends from Portugal and the British Isles to the north-east to China and Mongolia.

Estonia is a tit ubiquitous and commonplace breeder, through winter and immigrants. Tits nesting in 300,000 to 400,000 pairs. Africa has abundant winter tit bird which winters here 0.6-1.2 million individuals.

Great tits are primarily insectivorous in the summer, feeding on insects and spiders which they capture by foliage gleaning.

During the breeding season, the tits prefer to feed protein-rich caterpillars to their young. A study published in 2007 found that great tits helped to reduce caterpillar damage in apple orchards by as much as 50%.

Great tits are monogamous breeders and establish breeding territories. These territories are established in late January and defence begins in late winter or early spring.

Great Tit singing can be heard from winter to spring, thaw weather, but even in January or December. Several variations of the most well-known song trisyllabic “ti-ti-ta-ti-ti-ti-ti, he, he …” or disyllabic “he ti-ti-ta-ta ti …”. Tit sings early in the morning twilight, the evening could hear him until sunset.

The birds of prey sparrowhawk and Eurasian Pygmy Owl are the greatest enemies of tit.
