Stamps honouring Great Canadian Goalies who transformed hockey

Canada post proudly immortalize the Great Canadian Goalies on stamps, who played in the NHL between 1952 and 2015 and changed the way the game was played.

All goalies won the most coveted of prizes – the Stanley Cup® Championship and the Vezina Trophy, recognizing the NHL’s best goalkeeper.

The goalies changed the way the game was played or perceived, making them larger-than-life figures.

The Great Canadian Goalies featured on stamps are:

  • Lorne “Gump” Worsley (Montreal Canadiens)
  • Johnny Bower (Toronto Maple Leafs)
  • Tony Esposito (Chicago Blackhawks)
  • Bernie Parent (Philadelphia Flyers)
  • Ken Dryden (Montreal Canadiens)
  • Martin Brodeur (New Jersey Devils)

Each stamp features the player’s name and the logo of his main NHL team, along with a central colour image set against a hockey net background.

Each official first day cover shows a larger full colour action image of the goaltender on the left-hand side, with permanent domestic stamp in the upper right.

The pictorial cancellation makes up the logo of each player’s main NHL team displayed below the stamp.

The cancel location for each official first day cover is the specific player’s home town.

Canada Post has produced more than 50 NHL-themed stamps since 1992.

The stamp issue is the third of a five-year collection of NHL stamps leading up to the NHL’s 100th anniversary in 2017.
