Surya Namaskar Stamps commemorating International Day of Yoga 2016

India post issued Surya Namaskar Stamps to commemorate 2nd International Day of Yoga, celebrated annually on June 21 since its inception in 2015.

Indian Prime Minister, Shri Narendra Modi released twelve commemorative stamps and Miniature Sheet on 20 June 2016.

The stamps show a set of 12 powerful yoga asanas (postures) of Surya Namaskar.

International Day of Yoga

International Day of Yoga or commonly known as Yoga Day is celebrated annually on June 21 since 2015.

You may know, India post issued a commemorative miniature sheet in 2015 featuring a logo of International Day of Yoga.

United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) on December 11, 2014, declared June 21 as International Day of Yoga.

Yoga is a 5000-year-old Indian body of knowledge which aims to integrate the body and the mind.

The term ‘Yoga’ is derived from the Sanskrit root ‘YUJ’, meaning ‘to join’ or ‘to yoke’ or ‘to unite’.

As per Yogic scriptures, the practice of Yoga leads to a perfect harmony between the mind and body, Man and Nature.

The aim of Yoga is Self-Realization, to overcome all kinds of sufferings leading to ‘the state of liberation’.

Yoga originated in India, is one of the oldest sciences of the world.

Yoga is very useful for preserving and maintaining one’s physical and mental health and also for ‘spiritual evolution’.
