Spain post issued a Contemporary Art souvenir sheet depicting the various stages in the work of artist Antoni Tapies.

Painter and sculptor Antoni Tàpies was born in Barcelona in 1923 and began his career as a self-taught artist. In 1946 after abandoning his law studies he began to paint realistic portraits and went on to expressionist compositions made with heavily textured materials and mild strokes. In 1948 he founded the legendary group Dau al Set with artist and poet Brossa, philosopher Arnau Puig and artists Modest Cuixa, Joan Ponç and Thàrrats.

Through these he became friends with Joan Prats and met Joan Miró. The style he develops in those years is framed within the “magic realism” that is perceived through fantastic and oneiric landscapes. These works show the influence of Klee and Ernst.

In 1949 he presented his works in Madrid for the first time and in 1950 won a scholarship from the French government and moved to Paris. After abandoning Surrealism in 1953, he returned to his matter paintings, in which he used earth to produce incisions and collages and through which he begins to project his inner self. Coinciding with this new plastic stage he exhibits in the Venice Biennale in 1952 and a year later is awarded the Grand Prix for Art at the Biennale of Sao Paulo 1953.

It is the largest non-commercial event of its kind in the world, presenting the original works of books for children and youth in a competitive way.

The BIB International Jury awards 11 prizes – Grand Prix BIB, five BIB Golden Apples and five BIB Plaques. Biennial of Illustrations Bratislava is the most important event organized by BIBIANA, the International House of Art for Children. It is held every odd year in the autumn in Bratislava. The latest event in 2009, the 22nd year of BIB was attended by 344 authors from 37 countries with nearly 2500 illustrations.
The post stamp is a reproduced illustration from the book Tracy’s Tiger by a talented young Slovak artist Martina Matlovi?ová-Králová (24th Dec 1975), which won the previous Biennial BIB Golden Apple.

Martina Matlovi?ová-Králová studied at the Academy of Performing Arts in the Department of Animation. She, however, concentrates mostly on book illustrations, which earned her several awards. Perhaps thanks to her having studied animation that we can observe a stage design vision in her works. Her work is characterized by the use of combined techniques – painting is often supplemented by collage which completes the whole illustration compositionally.

Between 1933 and 1962 newspaper cartoons by Harold ‘Dusty’ Miller (1898-1964) captured political and social issues in a way that text alone could not. Some cartoons would remain topical for generations. Occasionally he bordered on morale-raising or conscience pricking propaganda but mostly visualized public sentiment. Miller won a scholarship to Liverpool School of Art when 13. Financially unable to take advantage of it, he became a telegram message boy, at 14, for Liverpool Post Office.

Later, in a World War 1 trench, he designed a 1917 Christmas card which the Postmen’s Federation adopted for sending to postal workers in the armed forces. In 1919 Miller joined Liverpool City Police and designed a police Roll of Honour. Health considerations, however, led to him moving with his Manx wife to the Isle of Man in 1926 and becoming advertising manager and artist for the Isle of Man Times and Examiner newspapers. Cartoons had to be produced to meet the newspapers’ weekly deadlines and were often drawn at home.

In 1953 Dusty’s artistry in oils and water colours led to his being founder chairman of the Isle of Man Art Society. His dream of an annual Easter art exhibition was realised in 1963, one year before his death, aged 66.

T.N.Rajaratnam Pillai, the Nagaswara Chakravarti (emperor) hailed from Tiruvadudurai in Tanjavur District. His gurus in Nagaswaram were his uncle Tirumarugal Natesa Pillai and later, Tiruvadudurai Markandam Pillai. Endowed with a very fine voice, he also learnt vocal music from Tirukkodikaval Krishna Iyer. His playing was marked with brilliance, be it racy renditions or slow explorations. His exquisite and soulful playing covered the entire gamut, displaying the different shades and subtleties of the raga, thus revealing the total panorama. He was so popular that a large number of Nagaswaram youngsters were named Rajaratnam.

Thanjavur Balasaraswathi was a celebrated Indian dancer, and her rendering of Bharatanatyam, a classical dance style, made this style of dancing of South India well known in different parts of India, as also many parts of the world.

Veenai Dhanammal was a highly accomplished Carnatic musician, and the torchbearer of the school of Carnatic music that goes by her name. She was both a vocalist and a performer on the veena. The prefix “Veenai” in her name is an indicator of her exceptional mastery of that instrument.

Liechtenstein post issued a set of stamps featuring the art work of some of the most famous artists of Liechtenstein.

Those responsible for Liechtenstein Art Museum made it clear from the outset that the works displayed in their exhibition rooms would not be confined to established artists. Their primary concern is to create new perspectives by exhibiting not only new and, for the Liechtenstein public, sometimes still unknown artists and their work, but also contemporary artistic trends and concepts. There is an especially strong emphasis here on the concept of “Arte povera” (“art by simple means”), a movement among visual artists from Rome and northern Italy in the second half of the 1960s. It is now the case that the most important public collection of work by Arte povera artists is to be found at Liechtenstein Art Museum.

Among the best-known Arte povera artists, who sought to decrease the distance between work and viewer, bridge the gap between art and life and broaden people’s perception by using as artworthy materials everyday objects generally considered worthless, are Alighiero Boetti (1940–1994), Marisa Merz (1931) and Jannis Kounellis (1936).

The commemorative stamps depict first Boetti’s “Normale e anormale” (face value CHF 1.00), an embroidery commissioned by the artist from Afghan women in which the letters of Normale e anormale are distributed over a grid pattern composed of rectangles. The second stamp shows Merz’s “Testa” (face value CHF 2.20), a head crudely modeled from clay, plaster and modelling compound and then painted. Finally, the third stamp (face value CHF 3.60) shows an object by the Greek artist Kounellis fabricated from steel, coal and wire.
