As a supporter of Children’s Health Camps since 1929, New Zealand Post is proud to lend a hand once again with the 2011 Children’s Health stamp issue. Te Puna Whaiora – the New Zealand Foundation for Child and Family Health and Development – specialises in helping at-risk children aged five to 12 to overcome barriers to healthy lifestyles. The 10-cent surcharge on each stamp in this issue goes directly to Te Puna Whaiora’s seven Children’s Health Camps throughout New Zealand, each playing a crucial role in helping children and their families in times of need.

The flightless birds featured on the stamps are also in need of love and support. The kiwi, k?k?p? and takah? were all once more abundant and widely distributed throughout New Zealand than they are today. It’s only through the ongoing help of conservation programmes that we are now able to enjoy these unique and precious birds.

Kiwi – 60c + 10c surcharge
Easily identified by its long beak, round body and hair-like feathers, this nocturnal bird belongs to a group of birds called ratites and has been adopted as one of New Zealand’s most national symbols. This stamp features the brown kiwi (Apteryx mantelli), one of five species of kiwi.

K?k?p? – $1.20 + 10c surcharge
The k?k?p? (Strigops habroptilus) claims the titles of the heaviest parrot in the world, as well as the only flightless parrot. Unfortunately for the k?k?p?, this rare bird alerts predators such as stoats to its presence due to its distinctive musty odour.

Takah? – 60c + 10c surcharge
With its blue and green feathers, red beak and stout legs, the takah? looks very similar to a p?keko – only much bigger. The largest living member of the rail family, the takah? spends most of its days looking for nourishment in grass stalks, fern roots and insects.

The competition’s topic I WILL DRAW A FLOWER CHILDREN’S STAMP was suggested by Martin Van?o.

The national art competition is dedicated to both physically and mentally handicapped children regardless of age. The first chairman as well as co-founder of the competition was a prestigious Slovak artist, Professor Karol Ondrei?ka. After his death, his office was taken over by Professor Dušan Kallay which he continues to hold. In 2010, the national competition included artwork by five thousand children from almost 400 special and integrated elementary schools, children’s homes, and welfare and re-educational institutions.

Within twelve years of the competition’s existence, which started with the publication of children’s magazine Fifík as well as children’s Association Turtles, children have painted, drawn, modelled and embroidered nearly 70,000 works of art. They have created four mascots which represented our delegation of sportsmen at the Paralympic Games. The artwork has also decorated the corridors of the Cardiologic Centre in Bratislava, they have been published in many printed media as well as illustrations for a book of original children’s tales with the title Little Angel in Tall Grass, adapted by Slovak writers.

Sweden Post is making a serious commitment to social responsibility by issuing a charity stamp every year. The first beneficiary is Save the Children.

Breve Danmark has issued annual charity stamps since 1959. As part of Posten Norden’s efforts to expand the reach of its corporate responsibility, the Swedish organisation will also begin to offer charity stamps.

The stamps, which are for domestic letters, will be sold in ten-stamp booklets at a cost of SEK 70, of which SEK 10 will be donated to a charity. This year’s charity stamp will be available for purchase starting March 24.

Save the Children, which is the first beneficiary, will receive its donation in January 2012.
“There are a lot of people out there who are dedicated to supporting humanitarian projects. I am proud that Posten Norden, via both its daily operations and the annual charity stamp, will be able to help even more people make a contribution,” says Lars G. Nordström, President and CEO of Posten Norden.

The charity stamp provides Sweden Post with the opportunity to work closely with organizations that are making the world a better place. The new stamp will also provide a more consistent and clearer structure for handling the large number of requests from organizations that would like to be featured on a stamp.

For Save the Children, Posten Norden’s commitment is very important. Funds raised from the sale of the charity stamp will be used to help children in conflict- and catastrophe-stricken countries to read and write.

A stimulus for play, an invocation of joy! International Children’s Festival in Šibenik has reached half-a-century of age and has entered into its 51st year of existence! Founded in 1958, in its beginnings it was organised randomly– in the way children usually do things – sometimes yes and sometimes no! It kept changing its name (First Festival of the Child, Festival of the Child Šibenik, Yugoslav Child Festival, International Child Festival), testing concepts, wandering and inquiring all around with the goal to show to anyone – during its 15 days of duration, from the middle of June to the beginning of July – all the good and valuable in productions for children and creations by children themselves.

In which way the festival ran all these years, and what was actually happening, tell us monographies, movie documents, radio and television programs, various chronicles, notices, reviews, bulletins… presenting compliments and thanks to all those who supported and maintained the festival with their wits, joy, all kinds of knowledge and benevolence, promoting Šibenik into a town of play, opposing to any kind of impotence and ill-temper. To the children of Šibenik the Festival brings twofold joy: the end of a school year marks the beginning of the Festival and it is hardly awaited since it is a kind of monopoly on play, that colours, babbles and sets the town loose, turning it into a site for any kind of mystery and opportunity, liberating it from the pose and phrase, from ill-temper and anxiety.

For, it jumps, sings, dances, acts, juggles, paints, draws, makes all what the children do in kindergartens, first class, eight class end even those in higher classes and older. The Festival days are like an interspace, that (broke free from the usual course of events, an international children’s interspace visited by unusual living beings “of sparkling eyes, rosy cheeks, mouth always ready for laughter”, as already some time ago noticed and written down for his Hobbits, by the great master Tolkien! This is the time of festivity and wonder, invaded from all continents, in all thinkable casts and directions, by fairy-tales, fables, dolls, plays, shadows and masks, music, songs, dance… Magicians, witches, Caesars, chimney-sweepers, pucks, dragons, kings, knights, dwarfs, old witches, princesses, musketeers, queens, giants, beggars, captains… all flow in. Oh, what kind of clothes, costumes!

Thailand post issued a set of four stamps of Khun Chang-Khun Phaen as a part of National Children’s Day.
Khun Chang-Khun Phaen, a traditional Thai literature narrative, is about a love triangle between one woman (Wanthong) and two men (Khun Chang-Khun Phaen). It is believed to be based on a true story from the Ayutthaya Period.

Since then it has been handed down as a folk narrative. Prince Damrong assumed that the origins of the narative lay in the beginning of the Khum Hai Karn Chao Krung Kao Chronicle (The Chronicle of the Statements Made by the Inhabitants of the Ancient Capital). These three characters were from Suphan Buri. Wanthong and Khun Phaen were involved in a secret love affair and they were not yet married when Khun Phaen was conscripted for war.

Khun Chang made every attempt to win Wanthong was his wife but on returning from the war, Khun Phaen took her away from Khun Chang, who went in search of her only to be hurt by Khun Phaen. A plan was devirsed to track them down and, after their arrest, Wanthong was executed for her indecisive love for two men.

The stamps are Illustrating comic-style characters of Thai classic literature titled “Khun Chang-Khun Phaen”
1. Khun Phaen
2. Khun Chang
3. Khun Phaen’s ghost boy called Kumara Thong and Hong Prai, a female spirit in his power
4. Nang Phimpilalai
Norway Post issued a set of stamps Mormor og de åtte ungene (Grandma and the Eight Children) as stamp subject for Europa 2010.

The first of the seven books in the series was published in 1957. The books are about a family who move from a tiny urban flat to a red cottage in the forest.

The author takes us back to a Norway where having a phone installed was an adventure and where it was possible to load Grandma and eight children on to the back of a truck and drive up to the mountains. Since there are so many of them and they live so closely together, Maren,Martin, Marte, Mads, Mona, Milly, Mina and Morten are a little more inventive than most children – like the time when little Morten invites four pigs for coffee in the neighbouring farmhouse parlour!

The first of nine books about Lillebror and Knerten appeared in 1962. Knerten is possibly Anne-Cath. Vestly’s best-known character and many children have found a good friend in him. He is actually a tree root that looks like a little boy, but for Lillebror he is a boy. Knerten is Lillebror’s best friend, someone to confide in and share things with. Knerten is faithful and kind, but is very clear about what he wants. This leads to many an argument.

Anne-Cath. Vestly had made her debut in 1953 with Ole Aleksander Filibom-bom-bom, which was followed by books
about Aurora, about Guro, about Kaos, about Ellen Andrea and about Monrad. In these books she set the focus on current issues such as immigration, gender roles and solidarity and, in her positive story-telling way, also encouraged good attitudes in children. Norway’s stamps for this year’s Europa issue under the joint theme of Children’s books were illustrated by Anne-Cath. Vestly’s husband, Johan Vestly.

India post issued a stamp honoring the Cathedral and John Connon School, undoubtedly one of the most prestigious educational institutions in this country.

For the past 150 years it has imparted the finest education through the medium of English, and has the tradition of upholding the most worthy values of the civilized world. Like all good schools, no matter how old, Cathedral never stands still. It moulds the best of the past with the challenges of the present. Once the bastion of English public school values, today it reflects the multiculturalism that is India. Although run by the Anglo Scottish Education Society, its spirit of tolerance and brotherhood of all mankind is the very essence of secular India.

The School participates in The International Award for Young People (formerly the Duke of Edinburgh Awards Scheme) and the students are encouraged to be self-reliant, develop leadership skills and a love of the outdoors with the numerous camps and hikes conducted during the year.

It was ranked first in the Western region as the most respected school and ranked first in India for its distinguished alumni which includes top industrialists, businessmen, politicians, celebrities, and even Nobel laureates.
