IOM post commemorated the one-hundredth anniversary of the most infamous maritime disaster that shocked the world with a set of six stamps.

RMS Titanic was a British passenger liner that sank in the North Atlantic Ocean on 15 April 1912 after colliding with an iceberg during her maiden voyage from Southampton, England to New York City. The sinking of Titanic caused the deaths of 1,514 people in one of the deadliest peacetime maritime disasters in history. She was the largest ship afloat at the time of her maiden voyage. One of three Olympic class ocean liners operated by the White Star Line, she was built between 1909–11 by the Harland and Wolff shipyard in Belfast. She carried 2,224 people.

Her passengers included some of the wealthiest people in the world, as well as over a thousand emigrants from Great Britain and Ireland, Scandinavia and elsewhere seeking a new life in North America. The ship was designed to be the last word in comfort and luxury, with an on-board gymnasium, swimming pool, libraries, high-class restaurants and opulent cabins. She also had a powerful wireless telegraph provided for the convenience of passengers as well as for operational use. Though she had advanced safety features such as watertight compartments and remotely activated watertight doors, she lacked enough lifeboats to accommodate all of those aboard. Due to outdated maritime safety regulations, she carried only enough lifeboats for 1,178 people – a third of her total passenger and crew capacity.

After leaving Southampton on 10 April 1912, Titanic called at Cherbourg in France and Queenstown (now Cobh) in Ireland before heading westwards towards New York. On 14 April 1912, four days into the crossing and about 375 miles south of Newfoundland, she hit an iceberg at 11:40 pm (ship’s time; GMT?3). The glancing collision caused Titanic’s hull plates to buckle inwards in a number of locations on her starboard side and opened five of her sixteen watertight compartments to the sea. Over the next two and a half hours, the ship gradually filled with water and sank. Passengers and some crew members were evacuated in lifeboats, many of which were launched only partly filled. A disproportionate number of men – over 90% of those in Second Class – were left aboard due to a “women and children first” protocol followed by the officers loading the lifeboats. Just before 2:20 am Titanic broke up and sank bow-first with over a thousand people still on board. Those in the water died within minutes from hypothermia caused by immersion in the freezing ocean. The 710 survivors were taken aboard from the lifeboats by the RMS Carpathia a few hours later.

The Isle of Man Post Office issued a miniature sheet of stamps featuring the official CYG 2011 logo, and the Games mascot ‘Tosha’ to celebrate the fourth Commonwealth Youth Games which take place on the Isle of Man from the 7th – 13th September 2011. The first Commonwealth Youth Games were held in Edinburgh, Scotland in August 2000; since then Bendigo, Australia 2004 and Pune, India 2008 have also hosted the Games.

A decision was taken by the Commonwealth Games Federation at their General Assembly in 2005 to award the 2011 Commonwealth Youth Games to the Isle of Man. Preparations started immediately and now as we get ever closer the excitement is building and we are eager to give a warm Manx welcome to competitors, officials and guests from many of the Commonwealth nations.

The Isle of Man Post Office issued a set of stamps featuring the Narcissus flower, commonly known as the Daffodil. The issue is released to coincide with our attendance at the 27th Asian International Stamp Exhibition Wuxi, Jiangsu, China which takes place in November 2011. The stamps form part of a collection of issues from a number of countries depicting Chinese Flora.

Daffodils are as well loved in the Isle of Man as they are right across the British Isles. Every Island garden shows its rich drifts of cream and gold to welcome the sun in spring. The flowers are to be seen growing in yellow masses in the Island’s beautiful wooded glens, and landowners have planted thousands of bulbs along roadside hedgerows.

The English wild daffodil Narcissus pseudo-narcissus is seldom seen in the wild in the Isle of Man, but two other varieties have naturalised themselves successfully. The dainty scented Narcissus minor is called the ‘Manx Jonquil’ and can be seen widely, especially in the north of the Island. What could be an easier souvenir for a mariner to carry than a pocketful of seeds or a handful of bulbs from foreign parts? In view of the Island’s long seafaring tradition, it has been suggested that Narcissus minor was probably brought home by a Manx sailor direct from the Iberian peninsula.

Between 1933 and 1962 newspaper cartoons by Harold ‘Dusty’ Miller (1898-1964) captured political and social issues in a way that text alone could not. Some cartoons would remain topical for generations. Occasionally he bordered on morale-raising or conscience pricking propaganda but mostly visualized public sentiment. Miller won a scholarship to Liverpool School of Art when 13. Financially unable to take advantage of it, he became a telegram message boy, at 14, for Liverpool Post Office.

Later, in a World War 1 trench, he designed a 1917 Christmas card which the Postmen’s Federation adopted for sending to postal workers in the armed forces. In 1919 Miller joined Liverpool City Police and designed a police Roll of Honour. Health considerations, however, led to him moving with his Manx wife to the Isle of Man in 1926 and becoming advertising manager and artist for the Isle of Man Times and Examiner newspapers. Cartoons had to be produced to meet the newspapers’ weekly deadlines and were often drawn at home.

In 1953 Dusty’s artistry in oils and water colours led to his being founder chairman of the Isle of Man Art Society. His dream of an annual Easter art exhibition was realised in 1963, one year before his death, aged 66.

Produced by an Isle of Man company based in Ramsey, it has been broadcast on the BBC’s CBBC and BBC2 channels.

Friends and Heroes is now being dubbed into Manx Gaelic by an enthusiastic group of Manx speakers – the first mainstream TV animation ever produced in the Manx Language, available on DVD too for use in schools and homes.

Based in a fascinating and turbulent period of history, 69-71AD, Friends and Heroes introduces bible stories in a fresh way, creating clear connections between the bible themes and the exciting adventure stories. In each episode cartoon-style 2D animation tells the adventure, mixing seamlessly to 3D animation for the bible stories.

IOM post present the first of a landmark series of stamp issue focusing on the wartime Internment Camps of the Isle of Man.

‘Art History’ concentrates on the fortuitous coming together of European artists who were interned on the Island during the Second World War. Known as ‘His Majesty’s Most Loyal Enemy Aliens,’ these foreign nationals were separated from society rather than imprisoned and this unique concentration of talent in a handful of Manx guesthouses yielded a remarkable range of artwork that forms the basis of our stamp issue.

Under kindly captors a number of artists and musicians made the most of their time and some went on to become nationally and internationally famous in later life. Such artists as Kurt Schwitters, Martin Bloch, Ernst Eisenmayer and Hugo Dachinger developed their work to the sounds of the nascent Amedeus Quartet.
