An Post issued a stamp for The Gathering Ireland 2013. The Gathering is a tourism-led initiative that seeks to harness and strengthen the connections between Ireland and its global diaspora.
Billed as a spectacular, year-long celebration of all things Irish, The Gathering is an open invitation from the Irish people, to the 70 million people worldwide that claim Irish ancestry and indeed to anyone with a love of Ireland, to take a trip to Ireland during the year, and join in unique events being staged in their honor.
Studies have revealed that among the points made when one chooses one cultural destination over another, three elements prevail: cultural heritage, contemporary art, and design. The ‘Europa’ stamps, created for 2012 by the artist Linda Bos, trace precisely these three pillars of cultural tourism. The artist conceived the two stamps in such a way as to give the impression of a single image which on the left-hand side has the Monument au Souvenir ‘Gëlle Fra’ and, on the right, the watertower of Leudelange which features internationally renowned contemporary architecture. The two monuments are synonymous with the development of architecture in Luxembourg.
The European public postal operators members of PostEurop annually issue the Europa stamp series with a common theme. This year’s topic is devoted to promoting each country’s culture and tourism under the title: Visit … The theme is intended to promote each country’s most emblematic and characteristic features, as if stamps were a window open to the world of tourism promotion.
The Visit Spain stamp features characteristic tourist attractions full of symbolism; beaches, the fine weather, the sunlight and the artistic and cultural heritage. The stamp designer, artist J. Carrero has taken inspiration from the famous painting Las Meninas by Diego Velazquez to make a composition that mixes different concepts of tourism.
